Just starting out - Got screwed

I just started and was killed in the spawn area and I lost all the starter stuff including a book. plus I cant seem to be able to type on the server. I was all excited the server seemed awesome.
Anyone have any suggestions or ideas that can help?

How did you die in spawn?

Someone just walked up and hit me until I died. I was right in front of where it told me the site and I was registering and I heard myself getting hit.
