Right now, as it stands, the economy on McTopia needs a serious overhaul. One way is this spawning rank review. I agree with most of the points made (removal of power) and I can advocate that.
I also agree that spawning ranks should be more limiting. It genuinely makes me furious when people get SD before they get trusted. I acknowledge that they want to contribute to the server's upkeep, so I'm not saying a change needs to happen there, but later on. Meta's point, which I have agreed with for ages, but didn't become vocal for, at the risk of being called a hypocrite, is:
I admit, I play minecraft for the wrong reasons. I enjoy building, but I can't do survival. That's the reason I bought Obsidian, for the /god command. The /i command is simply a convenience, and I have only realistically used it for around 10, big projects. The /jail command, I felt I had the responsibility to use, because I had it at my disposal. If I didn't, I would have helped the server in other ways.
Back to the main point. SD's, at the moment, are over powered. I have said it once, and I will say it again. Why do SD's have the ability to set warps and change the weather? They basically rule over the mods, and I am thankful none do. This power disadvantage is key when the SD majority feel they are invincible because "I donated, and I can't get banned". They are the main offenders to 'helping' their friends, and thus making the value of iron drop harder than a Skrillex song.
This point comes up once in a while, and I think Matt, Me, and now Slurpie have said it. This time, let's actually implement this, even as a temporary trial:
There's my two cent's. Take it as you will.

I feel like there should be two new ranks. A "backup" VIP Obsidian, and a "backup" Superdonator.
Those would have almost the same prefix, but would contain a letter or different color or something to distinguish them.
As soon as they break any sort of spawning rule, their rank is demoted to the corresponding sub-rank.
This sub-rank would lose /jail, /mute, /i, /gm c, etc...
