When you get into technical algebraic calculations, '.' Frequently can be used as a sign for multiplication.
This is because in algebra you don't only use numbers, no you actually use letters and symbols as well.
Because 'x' is a letter, we commonly use it in algebra. Thus, we use '.' So people don't get confused as to whether 'x' is being used as a symbol or a sign of multiplication.
Using this terminology we can determine that the sum you wrote could be an algebraic equation.
Simplifying that we could put it as: 39 x 72.3
