I bumbled around in the snow a little, reluctantly eating the carrots James gave me. I was still crying. I couldn't believe I acted like that when I saw the egg. What if something happened? What if I actually...
Nevermind that. I can't tell you what I might have done.
On my trek to the house, I ran into Purity. I quickly transformed into a girl and rushed to greet her.
"Hi Purity!" I bounced.
"Hello, Alice. Why are you out here?"
Oh no. What was I supposed to say now?! I couldn't remind her of how I acted towards the egg. Maybe I'll just pretend to not know anything. Maybe I should just run. Should I lie? Yeah. That's what I'll do.
As I scrambled to form an intelligent answer, Purity was still waiting. I snapped out of my trance, embarrassed to be caught thinking so long.
"I just...needed some air." The sentence came out strangled and choppy.
Purity looked at me oddly. I knew why. She knew better...Purity saw the truth and the good in everyone, which simultaneously gave her the capability to see right through lies.
And what I just said, was a major lie.
She stepped in closer.
"Why did you really leave?"
I faltered.
"You can tell me. The goodness and faithfulness in me will stop me from telling anyone else."
Something told me to believe her.
Something told me to trust her.
Ah, why not.
"Is the egg still there?" I asked. Purity nodded.
"I'm assuming your strange behavior has something to do with the dragon egg Avi found."
I remained silent.
Inhaling deeply, I motioned for her to follow me, walking towards the house.
We trudged in silence for five minutes, leaving light footprints in the freshly fallen snow. I began to wonder why she was outside, like me, all alone. Maybe she was looking for me.
We were almost near the house, and my stomach began to flutter. This was it. I realized EVERYONE was crowded around the egg, so if I showed Purity, I'd be showing everyone. Might as well. They have a right to know. I wouldn't tell them everything. Maybe I'd lie again, despite Purity's capability to detect lies. I wouldn't tell them the full truth, I'd just show them what happens when I'm near a dragon egg. I'd make up some lie about bunnies being allergic to dragons or something.
Stepping inside, the warmth of the fireplace reached its inviting arms to the doorway, where it engulfed us in its hot blankets. We drew closer to the fire, where the egg sat. I glanced at Purity, who was looking at me curiously.
Breathing in slowly, I cleared my throat and spoke up.
"Everyone, can I have your attention!" People stopped their humming chatter to listen.
I took off my leather jacket, leaving only a black tank top and a pink scarf. I removed my black boots, leaving only my black skirt and pink stockings. I tiptoed on stocking feet over to Avi and put my hands on her shoulders.
"As you obviously know, Avi brought home a dragon egg." I stepped back and prepared a lie about bunnies in my head.
"I guess I should tell you I have a fear of dragon eggs." Looking back at Purity, I could tell she knew it was a lie, but played along.
Quickly fluffing my hair, I stepped up to the egg. A rushing sensation came over me. I covered my constellation birthmarks to hide the fact that they were glowing. Breathing in, I heard the others gasp as they witnessed my white ears turn light red. More of a pink shade, if you will. My eyes went from dark brown to red. Not cute at all but this was natural. They saw my pink, full lips burn bright, vampire red.
I spoke, and they recoiled in shock how my voice took on a double sound, one being my normal twinkling voice and another being a deeper, scratcher, metallic harmony.
"So...you'll be like this every time you see a dragon egg?"
I nodded guiltily, knowing that I was an excellent liar, and that everyone minus Purity would believe me. But I began acting strangely again, not myself. I was silent, and my eyes took a hungry, vicious look. I knew I had to stop lying about this and get away from the wretched egg. So I turned into a bunny and popped up the stairs. Turning human once more, I leaned over my dresser and breathed in and out. My whole body was shaking and my skin was an unnaturally pale shade.
I couldn't do this for long. One of had to go. Either me or the egg.
Once I regained my composure and redid my makeup, I came downstairs with a smile.
A fake smile, of course.
Nevermind that. I can't tell you what I might have done.
