So I've been playing this one game called Kerbal Space Program for maybe a few months now and it's super addicting so I wanted to know if anyone else plays so they could give me advice and such to play
" title="Razz">. I also wanted to share a quick story of something that just happened to me today, it is literally like the exact plot line to gravity almost
(Broken into bits so it's easier to read)
Anyways so I was building a new space station in a mid/low orbit out of kerbin for refueling and role playing or what not. I had already put together four or five mini jets on a docking station so I needed a bit more room. I put a few rockomax jumbo-64 tanks with asparagus staging ranging from one to three high of the tanks all with main sails. The cargo of the trip was a long beam with 16 docking ports, RCS, and a few empty control stations for the landed kerbals. I made the station so that there was jets on either side, mostly to avoid flipping the craft from overshooting while docking. Staged under the jets were fuel rods and LARGE docking ports of which I had used by accident.
Once I finished building the craft I did my usual routine of docking. I normally wait until the station is 90 degrees from you to the center of kerbin, so I did that and shot high into the air. As I was exiting the atmosphere, I realized that I never did a test run to see if all the parts were staged correctly and did their job, but I thought I had it down so I didn't abort the flight. Bad. Idea. I then matched my orbit for an encounter, got close to the ISS (my space station), and tried to dock. It wasn't easy lining up two long beams for enough time to dock, but I got it close.
For some reason, as I was switching characters from the ISS back to the beam, the ISS had rotated and got about 100 meters closer, speeding up quickly. I fired off my rockets as fast as I could, but a collision was going to happen, so I just braced everyone for impact. It was a huge explosion that sent parts flying everywhere. I quickly gathered the still working parts and docked them as fast as I could. Most of the ISS stayed in the same condition, mostly just batteries and solar panels broke off, but a few rockets were destroyed.
I sent a jet out to grab the beam because it seemed to be the farthest out and I still wanted to continue my original mission. Not only did it break, the RCS and the only working jet were on one side of the split, while the control center, RCS ports, and fuel were on the other. Luckily though, both sides had docking ports so it would just be a struggle to get them back together. I tried docking my rescue rocket to one half of the beam but it just didn't seem to work. After many tries over the span of almost 15 minutes, I then realized that the beam had large docking ports... every docking port on the ISS is a small docking port, and they are not reverse compatible. Crap. The ISS now is somewhat usable but the map shows the remains of the crash. ISS debris is everywhere orbiting kerbin, none of the debris is able to send it's self down, so now I'm
stuck on what to do.
My available options:
-Clean the space debris, long and boring task
-Wait for the debris to come back and hit the ISS
-Send another rocket up with both ports on it to try and collect the beam
Right now I'm really liking the 3rd option, so I think construction will start tomorrow.
Got any KSP stories to tell? If not, any space stories?
