The current server that you are able to get on and play right now is a temporary server. However, when bukkit releases craftbukkit version for 1.7 minecraft, I will be importing the map currently running on the temporary server into the main server. So if you build something now, it will NOT be a waste of time as you will be able to get back to it when the map is imported. Obviously the reason I am doing this is to get a nice head start on 1.7 since most people are on the version anyways. Its also fun to play something more vanilla for a change (talking to donors and admins). So build away and you should probably write down important coordinates so you can find your stuff when it gets transferred.

How will the inventories be delt with between worlds? If I go mine 100 diamonds in the temp 1.7.2, will my inv be cleared when craftbukkit 1.7.2 comes out? Or, worse, will my 1.6.4 inventory be cleared?

That's a very good question, I think your 1.6.4 inventory will be kept, so keep your stuff from 1.7 in a chest
