Actually, just because you heard a rumor on the internet doesn't mean it's true.
The creator of pokemon was a very large insect enthusiast, he used to catch an catalog hundreds of bugs, thus came the inspiration of the "Gotta Catch 'Em All!" slogan and theme.
The creator wanted a game where people who also like catching and tending for creatures could battle and trade with their friends, thus, Pocket Monsters was made, or Pokemon for short.
