When you get into technical algebraic calculations, '.' Frequently can be used as a sign for multiplication.
This is because in algebra you don't only use numbers, no you actually use letters and symbols as well.
Because 'x' is a letter, we commonly use it in algebra. Thus, we use '.' So people don't get confused as to whether 'x' is being used as a symbol or a sign of multiplication.

I know what you are saying, but the dot WASN'T IN THE AIR. It means multiplication if it's IN THE AIR.

On Computers, the dots do not go into the air, you...well...to make them, it is complicated.
Therefore, I think Panda Is right.
